Mike Flanagan - UK
I live and work in Leeds, Northern England. I am
a 1st dan in Shinseido Shorin Ryu under Sensei Roger Sheldon and 1st dan
in Ao Denkou Jitsu under Sensei Rick Clark. Along the way I've dabbled
in several karate based arts including Wado Ryu and Taekwondo. I
also 'worked the doors' for several years in my youth. I've never
been much of a fan of the sporting side of Karate, preferring to focus
on training for self-defence. In January 2001 I opened a dojo in
Leeds, teaching Shinseido Shorin Ryu.
I am very much a believer in using vital points (atemi
/ kyusho) to make the job of negating violence that much easier.
I have attended seminars with a number of reknowned teachers in this field
and would say I am most strongly influenced by (other than the instructers
already listed above) Sensei Vince Morris, who is only 70 miles down the
road from me in Nottingham. However, having formally studied Traditional
Chinese Medicine (I am a qualified and active Shiatsu practitioner) I do
not consider 'TCM' to be a particularly useful model for explaining how
atemi/kyusho works, preferring instead to look at the subject from the
viewpoint of modern western medicine.
I do have a life outside martial arts however:-)
By day I am a project manager in a local hospital and by night I am a Shiatsu
therapist. I also do a bit of web-design & IT support now and
then. And that pretty much takes up most of my time. I'm also
learning to salsa - I'm at about white belt level and possess two left
feet.

My name is Mik Flounders and I am an UK expat currently
residing in Saudi Arabia. I have been shodan for about four years now and
teach a small group of fellow expats.
I first started corresponding with Hoosain some months
ago after having found his web page in one of my early internet excursions.
(By the way Hoosain many thanks for the information. I have just returned
from leave to find it waiting. We are reviewing for "local" differences.
